The Simple Life

Lately I’ve been trying to simplify my home. My mom always taught me to purge unused items by example. She was always cleaning out closets when I was growing up. Well, recently I’ve been taking this to a whole new level.

One area in my life that had gotten waaaaay out of control and cluttered was my bathroom. I had products eeeeevvvveerrywherre! Ok, not just my bathroom in the master bedroom, but the guest bath, and downstairs bath were absolutely overflowing with lotions, make-up, body mists, facewashes, and creams. You name it, I probably had it under there. It was almost hazardous opening the cabinets to look for something. Ok, ok…it didn’t help that I worked for Victoria’s Secret for years and they were always giving me free items to try as well as first access to the Semi-Annual Sale beauty bins. Yes, it was GREAT. I loved every minute, but enough was enough.

Fast forward to last summer. Most of you probably don’t know this about me, but I went through health problems that changed my life. In June I was suffering from a lot of symptoms that prompted me to go to the doctor. After many hours in a specialist’s office and a ton of lab test later, I had my diagnosis…lupus. This diagnosis literally changed my way of thinking and living.

Lupus can affect pretty much any organ. It can also affect everyone differently. The number one way my body has been changed by lupus is through my skin.  I had rashes that spread all over my body, my hands and feet swelled so big that I thought my skin was going to tear open. At one point I couldn’t even bend my fingers. For a while there I was worried that was never going to get relief. Obviously I was started on a regimen of medications, but I still was having rashes, etc. I started really doing some research and even spoke with a NP that focused on natural rheumatology treatments. She talked to me about preservatives and encouraged me to really be conscious about what I put in or on my body.

So all this to say, I decided I was going to conquer my skincare first. I made a decision to only use products that were organic and free or preservatives. Luckily for me, my mom has been making 100% natural/preservative-free soaps for years. She gave me a bar that was made from olive oil, sage oil, lavender, and oatmeal.

I started using it and soon got rid of all my special face wahses, scrubs, astringent, and even moisturizers! I began using it about 3 months ago, and let me tell you…..I have not had a single rash or flare-up, let alone breakouts!

After seeing what switching to all natural/organic products might do for me, I also switched my makeup products to natural products. That’s when I found Physician’s Formula’s Organic Wear line.

So far I’ve tried the bronzer(seen on the far left above) and the loose powder(seen below). My skin has never been more grateful.

I have literally thrown out everything except for my natural soap, the organic wear makeup, Burts Bees moisturizer, a few shades of eyeshadows, and my mascara. It has really freed me up and given my bathroom a makeover. My cabinets are now clean and organized and clear of all those products that I was holding on to, but not really using.

Pairing down your beauty routine this drastically may not be for everyone,I realize this(for me it was a real health issue). But I challenge you to look at the things you are holding onto. Are you using everything in your cabinets or is it just occupying valuable space that you could be using for something else?

P.S. I was talking to my friend, Amy about this and she expressed an interest in trying a bar of all natural soap to see what it might do for her. I am definitely interested to see what happens and what she thinks about it.
